The Setting

Queenston – Niagara-on-the-Lake is located just off the Niagara Parkway, between the Floral Clock and the Butterfly Conservatory - Horticultural Gardens, at the foot of Queenston Heights - Brock Monument. Previously part of Newark, capital of Upper Canada (Ontario), where the first Parliament was convened, it was also the home of Laura Secord and Robert Hamilton – who founded the city of the same name. Later, it also has the historical distinction of being the home of the earliest Niagara vineyard – Hillebrand Estates.

Originally built in the 1790’s by Robert Hamilton, the house was mostly destroyed during the War of 1812. The section remaining now forms part of the retreat in the West Gardens close to the Bird Sanctuary. Rebuilt in the 1920’s, by the Brights Family, the Hamilton House now boasts three levels of the Niagara Gorge/River panorama against the American boarder with soaring ceiling, stone terraces, a dining room decorated by the artisans from Wedgwood of England* and graced by an opulent custom-made lead-crystal chandelier from Bohemia in the thirties, separate guest quarters on the third level, full basement which includes a self-contained apartment, a dog retreat, and a recently rebuilt two-level carriage-house with a cupola – the second level is roughed-in for an office (or domestic quarters ) whereas the ground level houses a four-car garage with a separate section for garden tools. Neither words, nor pictures, would be adequate to describe the simple majesty of the total environment. It must be experienced first hand.
